tips for keeping ‘roos quiet
First off, look to your right: Get a No Crow Rooster Collar! This will allow you to keep a rooster quiet, but in a humane way where he can still exhibit normal behaviors. But in the meantime, before you get one:

One thing that is universal for a typical rooster is that they crow a lot in the wee morning hours. Specifically from 5-6 am! This does not necessarily make for good relations with neighbors.

I bring my boys in at night into a downstairs room, underneath our deck. They sleep in dog crates that are filled with hay for bedding. Our bedroom is above them so we can still hear them crow a little. A way to keep them extra quiet is to make the room as dark as possible, and even cover the crates with a darker colored sheet as roosters typically do not crow until they see light coming in.

I let my boys out anywhere from 7-9 am. When they first get out, they can be pretty vocal as they are excited and calling to the flock. If you immediately feed them with their fresh veggies for the day, the roosters start to focus on that and don’t crow as much. It’s just a little trick to help your neighbors sleep in a little more :)

A trick for during the day is to keep your roosters together. Roosters are loudest when making contact calls to each other. So if you keep roosters in separate coops or in separate areas of your property, be prepared for some noise. I keep my boys all together in our yard with the hens and I can literally go all afternoon and not hear one crow out of all 10 of them. At times you wouldn’t even know we had roosters!

Though typically not an issue, if you have a small flock of standard size girls and are experiencing over-mating issues with a large rooster, get a bantam or medium size rooster instead. They’ll have a harder time of mating the hens and over-mating issues should stop.

NO CROW COLLARS!

One of the best inventions ever! A humane collar that keeps your rooster quiet, but still allows the rooster to exhibit normal behaviors such as clucking and giving warning signals. But when the rooster crows, he can’t take in as much air so he can’t make the full crowing noise. Non-invasive for the rooster AND it save lives! My certified avian vet approves and if he does, I do too!!
